Super Heroes Challenge on the Emerald Creek Dares Blog

It's time for a brand new challenge on the Emerald Creek Dares blog, featuring "Anything Goes".The team has created some fantastic Super Hero.  For my project I decided that I would create a Batman inspired Canvas using some of the fabulous Embossing Powders and one of the bat stamps that Emerald Creek has. Let's get started so that I can share with you how to create your own batman inspired canvas.

To start, you'll need to prime your entire canvas with White Gesso. Once your gesso is dry, apply two coats of Mustard Seed Distress Paint over your entire canvas. Allow at least 3 hours for the mustard seed paint to completely dry, you'll see in the next photos what happens if you don't. After the Mustard Seed paint has completely dried, trace with a pencil which ever batman logo you would like on the top of your canvas.

With the Mustard Seed paint now dry on your canvas, start by applying a layer of VersaMark ink using a VersaMark Pen, to the inside of the bat image. Sprinkle Slicked Smoke Embossing Powder over the entire bat image. Tap off the excess embossing powder and emboss with a heat tool. (As you'll notice on mine, the mustard seed paint wasn't dry yet, so when I tapped off the excess some of the embossing powder stayed on). With the first layer being embossed on your bat image, take your VersaMark pen and apply another layer of VersaMark ink to the bat image. Sprinkle Slicked Smoke Embossing Powder over the entire bat image. Tap off the excess and then emboss with a heat tool. Continue the previous step another two times and this will fill in all the little patches of yellow in your bat image.

With the bat image now embossed, it's time to move on to painting around the bat image. Start by painting the black gesso around the top line of the logo. Once the black line has been created, paint the Black Gesso out, so that the entire canvas is black, including the sides, except for the inside section where the bat image is. Allow at least 1/2 hour for the black gesso to completely dry. Once the black gesso has been painted and is dry, using a small brush paint a thin black line around the bat image so there's a break between the bat image and the yellow. Make sure that the black gesso is completely dry before moving on to the next step.

As you can see, my middle is painted with white gesso, that's because of the mess that I made with the embossing powder. If your canvas ended up like mine, you'll want to follow these steps. To begin, you'll want to paint the canvas with the black gesso. Paint the black gesso around the top line of the logo. Once the black line has been created, paint the Black Gesso out, so that the entire canvas is black, including the sides, except for the inside section where the bat image is. With a small paintbrush, paint white gesso around the bat image and right up to where the black line is from the black gesso. Allow 1/2 hour for the white gesso to dry. After the white gesso has dried, apply two coats of mustard seed paint around the bat image and all the way up to where the black line is. Allow a couple of hours for the mustard seed paint to dry. Once the mustard seed paint has dried, take some Black gesso on a small paint and paint around the bat image to tidy up the edges. With the same paint brush, I painted a thin black line around the bat image so that there's a break between the bat image and the yellow paint. Make sure that the paint is completely dry before moving on to the next.

To finish the background of the batman inspired canvas, apply VersaMark ink to the Batting Practice stamp (which is a set of three bats) and start by stamping in which ever corner of the canvas you'd like. Sprinkle Onyx Frost Embossing Powder over top of the stamped bat images. Tap off the excess powder and then emboss with a heat tool. Continue applying VersaMark ink the the Batting Practice stamp and stamp around the canvas until you've reached the corner you started in. I found it easiest to stamp a small section, sprinkle the embossing powder over top, emboss with a heat tool and then start on a second section.

You'll notice that there are some large patches of black in between the embossed bats. To fill those in I cut apart a second Batting Practice stamp, thanks to @dig_tcc for the idea! With the bats now cut apart, mount the bats on individual stamp blocks to make it easier for stamping. Apply VersaMark ink to whichever bat stamp you want and stamp it where there is a gap. Sprinkle Onyx Frost Embossing Powder over top of it, tap off the excess and then emboss with a heat tool. Continue alternating the bat stamps throughout the canvas. Remember to sprinkle the Onyx Frost Embossing Powder overtop, tap off the excess and then emboss with a heat tool.

With all the elements on your canvas now finished, here is what your batman inspired canvas should look like.
